Onomo Hotel Dar es Salaam
Legacy Edition

Onomo Hotel Dar es Salaam

Here’s how my poem earned me a three night stay at a hotel during the Christmas season. I entered a writing competition run by a Ugandan based magazine called Scrutiny and was fortunate enough to win it. And as a result, I received a three night stay at the Onomo hotel in Dar es Salaam, which also included breakfast.

I had never been to the Onomo hotel before, but it was easy to find. Onomo is a corporate hub located in the city centre in Posta Mpya – a business suburb in the Kisutu ward. The hotel’s location makes it simple to get to the city’s transportation links. As it is, the hotel is only a short stroll from the Posta Mpya bus station. The bus stand is just around the corner if you wish to try the public transport or share a “bajaji” – auto rickshaw. Because the hotel is in the heart of the city, access to uber services is simple, with only a short wait for a ride.

Plus, the hotel is located just one kilometre from the passenger terminal, where one can catch coastal ferries to escape to Zanzibar or the Pemba Islands.
The Kisutu neighbourhood is teeming with local food joints and Indian restaurants serving affordable meals. Other essential amenities that are also available include supermarkets, boutiques and smaller shops, pharmacies, saloons, and much more.

When you walk through the hotel doors, you’re greeted by a blast of cold air, providing immediate relief from the heat outside. There is a gift shop on the ground floor showcasing Tanzanian craftsmanship and locally designed jewellery for you to purchase. The hotel has a modern interior and a touch of African chic. I enjoyed sitting at the terrace connected to the hotel’s restaurant, whether working or simply having a conversation with the lovely Chantal, who arranged for my stay.

The Skybar which is located on the hotel’s rooftop has outdoor seating with amazing views of the city and a variety of savoury and fragrant mocktails. Cocktails as well for those that may opt for this choice. The music was great, with a mix of local, African, and international vibes that created a lively atmosphere.

During my stay I had the opportunity to explore Kisutu at night, something I hadn’t done in over fifteen years. By 8.00pm the streets were empty and quiet, with fruit vendors that displayed an array of colourful seasonal fruits. Indian restaurants were never empty, and there were always one or two ice cream trolleys roving the streets.

The best part of my stay at Onomo was exploring the city, visiting local hotspots, and enjoying the vibrant nightlife. Even though it had been a while, I didn’t miss a beat in the heels dancing the night away. I also met interesting people and made wonderful memories over the three nights.

My stay at Onomo was a great way to kick off my Christmas break. I was able to relax and unwind comfortably and in style before travelling with my family.
The hotel also offers convenient amenities such as well-equipped conference rooms, high-speed internet access, and a gym. And I definitely recommend it as a home away from home for mainly business travellers who find themselves in Dar es Salaam frequently.

Thank you to Scrutiny magazine for arranging a much needed holiday and ONOMO, Dar es Salaam for the exceptional hospitality.
